CCNY Racing car number 117 on the competition course
Baja SAE · City College of New York

We build it.
We race it.

CCNY Racing is the Baja SAE team at City College. We design, weld, and machine a single-seater off-road car — number 117 — in our shop in Harlem, then take it to national competition.

Who we are

A small team that builds everything itself

In 2023 we were down to two people. We could have folded. Instead we rebuilt — recruiting, restructuring, and getting a car back on the track.

We're still small, and that's our edge. Nobody specializes. Everyone welds, machines, wires, and turns wrenches across the whole car. You don't leave CCNY Racing having read about engineering — you leave having done it.

Inside CCNY Racing

Three things worth knowing about the car, the people, and what we're up against.

Car #117 at the Grove School of Engineering

Number 117

Car #117 runs a Kohler CH440 on a 4130 chromoly chassis we cut and welded ourselves. This season it gets a custom CV drivetrain with a 3:1 ratio, a gearbox built for 100 N·m of input torque, and a wide-range CVT.

The redesigned chassis is 13% lighter, and we raised ride height by 75% without giving up stability or cornering.

Everyone does everything

Because we're small, there are no narrow roles. The same people design suspension, machine uprights, wire the kill switch, and load the trailer at 4 a.m.

CCNY is part of CUNY, one of the most diverse universities in the country — and our team reflects that. It's a place where students get real, hands-on engineering experience they can't get from a lecture.

Baja SAE

Run by the Society of Automotive Engineers, Baja SAE asks student teams to design a single-seater off-road car, pass a brutal tech inspection, and then survive design judging, dynamic events, and a 4-hour endurance race.

In October 2025 we passed tech and finished 43rd overall at Baja SAE South Carolina — our first dynamic events in more than six years.
